Paint, Glass and Fabric Protection for your new 68 Plate

MAX WAX Masters of paint protection

This blog is about why you should decide to choose MAX WAX to prepare and apply Paint Glass and Fabric Protection systems over the dealerships offering.

This blog is written by me, (the Managing director of MAX WAX) and this is my opinion, based upon knowledge gained through 15 years in the trade that I would like to share with you.

People take comfort in selecting a top car brand and assume the brands message of quality will automatically apply to the dealerships Paint, Glass and Fabric Protection offering.  Most people make a purchase without thinking about what goes into the process or considering the alternatives.

Before you commit to the Dealerships offering.

The Technician

The most important person in this whole equation is the man or woman physically carrying out work to your brand-new vehicle.

Find out if their valeting team is in-house and employed directly by the dealership or if they use external subcontractors as a cheap solution for their valeting needs.

Does the external contractor pay their people on a piece rate for the work being carried out? Unfortunately, some dealerships task a subcontractor to prepare and apply up to 5 or 6 of these kits in one day.

Somehow many Paint Glass and Fabric Protection kits end up on eBay, the products route to this market is not an honest one! Is it any wonder that an underpaid, over worked operative might take a chance to make their money up by compromising quality, or not applying the invisible coatings that you have paid for?

A Paint Glass and Fabric Protection system being applied is only ever going to be as good as the care in preparation and application being carried out. If the worker is tasked to fail from the start, then you are not going to be getting what you paid for.

Quality of Workmanship
Check the correct preparation is being carried out, is the person preparing the vehicle using good quality preparation equipment, consumables and products for your brand new 18 plate vehicle?

Check the ability of the technician preparing and applying the protection, have they been properly trained and are they experienced?

Do they work as safely as possible to prevent scratching, putting swirl marks or “spider-webs” in the fresh, unprotected paint?

Does the salesman or valet manager know if a grit guard is used within the two-bucket wash method or what type of cleaning products they are using throughout the preparation stages?

Duration 5 Hours (minimum time for preparation and application)
All protectants need to bond directly to clean surfaces, free from defects and contaminants. If this is a brand new vehicle this preparation should take around 3 hours to prepare to the minimum standard.

The Paintwork
Blemishes in the paintwork should be removed, ensuring all surfaces are free from wax, silicone and grease, the protection will only bond to clean paint. This should include a gentle, yet detailed wash followed by tar and glue removal plus a light clay-barring to remove all contamination. Polishing by machine might be required for the removal of any imperfections in the paint.  All exterior surfaces need to be alcohol cleansed immediately before a paint sealant is applied.

The Exterior Plastics
Some protection systems include protection to exterior plastics, these are protected following proper decontamination and removal of any silicone gels that have been applied to allow effective protection.

The Glass
The glass needs any embedded contaminants to be removed so that polishing with an alcohol based glass polish will leave all glass crystal clear, then it can be protected externally.

The Interior
The interior should only require a thorough vacuum and wipe around, however, if the vehicle has been driven there might need to be some light shampooing which also would need to be dried prior to protection being applied.

The Wheels
Some protection systems include alloy wheel protection, to apply this correctly the wheels need to be removed to gain access.

The Application
The application to interior and exterior surfaces for most protection systems will take around 2 hours to apply with a degree of care. This is certainly not something that should ever be rushed.

The Price
Check how much you are being charged, unfortunately this can be hard work especially if leasing the vehicle when a dealership claims they are “throwing the protection in free of charge”. Whilst you wait in the showroom drinking their coffee, they come back to you with a deal which “gets you into the vehicle you want” that also “comes, inclusive of gap insurance and paint protection” and all within the monthly budget they somehow gleamed from you.

The Quality Control
Check the product has been applied, check the water beads up and rolls off the vehicles paint and glass. On the interior, spray some water onto the fabric seats or carpets, the water should not soak in, but bead up.

We have experienced so many of our own customers, who have paid good money at the dealership and have had no protection system applied at all!

The Facility

Take a look at the dealerships valeting facility, does it meet up to the plush perfection on display in the showroom?  The facility should be bright, clean and tidy with specific wet and dry areas. Is there a reason why the valeting bay at the dealership is hidden way out of the picture, along with the valeting staff and the work being carried out upon your new car?

Power up Your Vehicle Security To Prevent Keyless Theft

All modern-day vehicles have the same advantage and the same weakness: Technology. The very thing that is designed to improve the quality of our lives can be used against us in certain cases. The recent crime wave in the UK proves this point, in which thieves steal vehicles with advanced computer systems rather effortlessly by using laptops and power amplifiers. No matter how expensive or how cutting-edge they are, cars that come with keyless entry and ignition systems are being targeted by tech-savvy criminals by exploiting the keyless technology. The tremendous increase in the modern vehicle theft made security companies and car manufacturers pour more effort into improving the existing security systems and create new solutions.

How big a problem is the high-tech vehicular crime?

Police reports indicate that the number of criminals using sophisticated methods to break into and steal cars are on the rise. Over 80.000 cars have been stolen in the last year in the UK, and 70% of the car owners still had their keys on them. Keyless car theft is spreading all over the UK, and in certain neighborhoods, the numbers are exceedingly high compared to regular car theft. Munich-based Allgemeiner Deutscher Automobil-Club (ADAC), the largest auto club in Europe, recently said 110 models from 27 different manufacturers were at risk of being stolen based on the keyless system they used. In a test conducted by the club, which has 19 million members, the cars were easily “stolen” using the frequency-hacking device. An ADAC report said they were not only able to unlock the vehicles but also start them with no problem. “To date, car manufacturers have yet to find a foolproof solution to beat these car thieves,” the ADAC findings concluded.

So how do the thieves do it?

Well, vehicles are equipped with a plethora of technology nowadays with keyless entry being only one of them. But for a criminal with the right tool, it is like a thief finding the keys to your home and address at the same time. The latest crime wave in the UK exposed that millions of cars are prone to hacking and can be stolen in just under a minute by using a gadget that costs a mere £30. They are called power amplifiers, and criminals use these devices to boost the signal generated by the key fob and relay it to the vehicle. This is how it works: Normally, when you walk up to your car and try to open the door, the vehicle wirelessly picks up the signal from your key fob, and if the key is present, the door unlocks. The vehicle computer can perform a search for a key only within a few meters, but with the power amplifier, this range can be boosted to as much as 15 meters. The worst part for car owners is that these devices are so cheap even teenagers can afford them. There is even a separate crime wave where teenagers break into cars and steal the contents using these devices.

How do you protect your vehicle from keyless crime?

The very first thing to do is to prevent your key from transmitting the signal to the amplifiers should the criminals decide to target your vehicle. Car owners are being advised to keep their keys in containers called a “Faraday Cage” which blocks electromagnetic signals emitted from the smart key. You can find it on the market for as low as £15. Additionally, auto-experts advise using a combination of old-fashioned and advanced security measures to stop car thieves in their tracks. Steering-wheel locks, high-quality car alarms, and vehicle tracking systems are the best options to prevent any theft attempts and recover the vehicle in case your car is the next on the list. Among these options, vehicle tracking devices offer the best tools to deal with these adept criminals. Let’s take a quick look at some of these features and how they help to protect your vehicle:

Movement Alert:

Any unauthorized movement attempt from your vehicle will trigger an alert to notify you and give you the chance to interfere.

Shock Sensor/Vibration Sensor:

The tracking device can be configured to detect sudden impacts on the vehicle and send a notification to the owner.

Geofence Zone:

This feature allows the owner to create virtual perimeters around important locations such as the garage to send notifications every time the device enters or leaves the preset zones. One of the most prominent tools granted by the tracking systems.

Real-time Tracking:

Should the worst happen and thieves manage to get away with your car, you can pinpoint its exact location in a matter of seconds and alert the authorities for a quick recovery.

Immobilisation:

Another definitive solution to theft, immobilization allows the owner to stop the engine remotely. The immobilized vehicle can’t be started again without the owner’s authorization.

Just because you have a new car and it is equipped with the latest technology, it doesn’t mean it is safe. On the contrary, it can be the target of the new crime wave and a resourceful thief can hack into its system and steal your brand new vehicle in under a minute. Researchers from both security companies and car manufacturers are currently working on a solution to install a chip that tells the distance of your key from the car, eliminating any chance of perpetrators to open the car doors remotely or start the engine. But until then, you will need to ensure that no one can steal or break into your vehicle and this is where the vehicle tracking systems come into play. As far as security systems go, vehicle tracking systems are the best on the market. Rewire Security offers GPS based tracking solutions with absolute protection and offers state-of-the-art tools to give the car owners total control over their vehicle.
